Whether there is a lift decides the day
Torquay is about thirty-two miles by road from us — the furthest of our regular Devon runs, and comfortably a single day for most properties.
More Torquay moves are flats than houses, and a lot of those flats are conversions of big Victorian villas on the hillsides above the harbour. In a purpose-built block there is usually a lift. In a converted villa there is usually not, and the top floor is genuinely the top of a tall building.
- Say which floor, and say whether there is a lift. Both are in the calculator and together they move the price more than anything else here. A passenger lift takes a large slice off an upper-floor move.
- Hillside roads. Steep, often with a flight of steps from the road up to the door. Steps up to the entrance are their own bit of work, separate from the stairs inside.
- Seafront and harbour parking. Restricted and busy. We plan around it rather than arriving and hoping.
Furnished lets and short tenancies
A lot of Torquay's flats are let furnished and turn over frequently, so part-loads and single-room moves are common. If you are only taking your own things out of a furnished flat, that is usually a man-and-van job rather than a full removal, and it costs accordingly.
Around the bay
Chelston, Cockington, Babbacombe, St Marychurch, Shiphay and Ellacombe are all the same run. Paignton is three miles further round the bay, and Brixham beyond it.
